I used to think everyone had a clean, linear life story. Then the internet introduced me to the concept of lore. Now I can't hear someone casually say, "Oh yeah, I don't like elevators," without immediately wondering what kind of side quest led them to that conclusion. Nobody just doesn't like elevators. There's always lore. Maybe they got stuck in one for four hours. Maybe they met a celebrity in one when they were eight. Maybe they simply refuse to elaborate. Either way, I need the backstory. The funniest part about "having lore" is that everyone thinks theirs is either completely normal or far too complicated to explain.

You'll be talking to a friend about where to get coffee, and they'll casually mention they can't go to one particular café because "of the incident." The incident? No further details. Just enough information to make you think about it for the next three business days. Then there are the people whose lore leaks out by accident. Someone mentions pirates, and suddenly your coworker says, "That reminds me of my third-grade suspension." Excuse me? You can't just drop a sentence like that and continue answering emails. We're going to need a full PowerPoint presentation. I'm convinced every person has at least five stories that would completely change the way you see them.

The quietest person you know probably has the most unbelievable history imaginable. Maybe they accidentally ended up on live television. Maybe they won a llama in a raffle. Maybe they once got banned from a medieval fair for reasons that sound impossible until you hear the whole thing. And yes, we've all been guilty of saying, "It's a long story." No, it's not. It's lore. The internet has given us the perfect word for those oddly specific experiences that explain why we are the way we are. Suddenly every strange habit, irrational fear, and hyper-specific skill has become part of an ongoing character arc instead of just... being weird.

Personally, I love collecting little bits of other people's lore. It makes life feel much more entertaining. Everyone is walking around carrying years of stories that somehow never come up until the most random moment imaginable. So if someone tells you, "You can steal my swag, but not my lore," just know they're protecting the most valuable thing they own. Their character development.
